Community
Community defines our lives, our jobs, our families, our world. Engaging in conversations that determine how our community is shaped and stepping up to support fellow Sacramentans is the soul of EDGE.
Metro EDGE members, committees and events mobilize in regional action in relevant areas of our community. We engage young professionals in a constructive dialogue surrounding issues like transportation, sustainable living, education and the cultural arts, among others.
Metro EDGE also works to foster philanthropic activity amongst our members; supporting programs that develop future young professionals and the greater Sacramento region.
2011 Philanthropic beneficiary: Junior Achievement of Sacramento
This year we are partnering with our philanthropic beneficiary – Junior Achievement – to provide focus for Metro EDGE’s volunteer opportunities and our charitable giving.
Here’s a bit about who they are:
“Last year, Junior Achievement provided economic and business education programs to almost 9,000 area kids with help from 375 volunteers from the community. In 20ll, JA will celebrate 50 years in Sacramento with a goal to reach 10,000 students. There has never been a time when the work of JA has been more important than today. During these trying economic times, JA provides real-world learning opportunities to help young people become self-reliant, productive members of society. JA teaches financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. Learning takes the form of interactive classroom presentations, job shadow opportunities and hands-on projects. It’s a valuable program that equips young people with the skills, confidence and motivation they need to succeed beyond the classroom.”
Check out some of the exciting opportunities on the horizon for this partnership:
Classroom mentorship opportunities. Junior Achievement creates a system to enable our young professionals to volunteer in local classrooms and share their insights with the region’s students on topics such as job skill development, financial literacy and career searches. Metro EDGE volunteers are coming together for a training course on how it all works and then we’ll work individually or in teams of EDGE members to branch out into classrooms and teach the JA lesson plan. You can make it a one-time deal, or ongoing volunteer relationship. For a Q and A on how it all works – go here http://www.jasac.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq
