Metro Edge is starting a blog series entitled “Why we love Sacramento?” The series will feature some of Sacramento’s most prominent bloggers and what makes Sacramento so special to them. Our hope in starting this series is to share the treasures that we have all come to love here in the city with the rest of Sacramento’s young professionals.
First up is a great post from Julie Berge of Sac Foodies!
When you ask a Sacramentan what they love about their city, they’ll probably mention something about our close proximity to the mountainsides of Lake Tahoe or the nightlife in San Francisco. But ask a SacFoodie what we adore most about Sacramento and we’ll likely boast about a few of our other neighboring commodities - like the thousands of local farms and premiere wine growing regions. And as busy professionals, one of the easiest ways we’ve come to enjoy these appetizing amenities is through happy hour. Traditionally this has been a time of day set aside for drink specials, but in Sacramento happy hour patrons will also find a smorgasbord of food menu options.
Having lived in Midtown for the last few years, my go-to spot has become Lounge ON20 where, Tuesday through Friday nights, from 5 – 7 PM, you will not only find $5 cocktails, bubbles and wine, but can also enjoy a $5 lounge food menu. Happy hour menu items include mixed olives, house-made fries with garlic aioli, a chef’s choice skewer sampler and my personal favorite - Fried Mac ’N Cheese made with white truffle oil. I frequent this happy hour destination for gatherings with girlfriends to business meetings and have always found the refined lounge atmosphere and menu options a perfect pairing.
But don’t just take my word for it! Following are a few other local favorites from fellow SacFoodies:
58 Degrees & Holding is definitely one of my favorite spots in Sacramento to relax after work. The menu is available Monday through Friday 3 – 6 PM and offers $5 glasses of the featured red or white wine, $10 featured red and white wine flights as well has half-priced featured small plates. On the menu, I have a hard time straying from the Artisanal Cheese Plate. Six different cheeses served with a French baguette, roasted nuts and apricot-fig compote – yum, but be sure to bring friends to help!

My favorite spot is Capitol Garage because they always have the latest seasonal beers on draft and offer appetizer specials. Plus, they have a great patio to take advantage of during the summer months. I recommend getting the nachos during happy hour – for just $4.95 you can enjoy a huge plate of nachos with the works and they do not skimp on the toppings!

Il Fornaio turns up the happy for customers with free food for the working weary! Enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail paired with bruschetta, cheese and salami, and mini pizzas or sandwiches from their free appetizer bar on the patio.

I love downtown, but since I spend most of my time in the ‘burbs, my go-to spot is Fat’s Asia Bistro in Folsom. After a long week, there’s nothing better than catching up with my sisters and friends over fried calamari and a nice glass of wine. All appetizers are half-price during happy hour and many drinks are offered at a discount. And, if it’s been a really tough week, I know I can also get a slice of their famous (and delicious) banana cream pie! Fat’s offers happy hour all week long (Monday-Friday 3-6 PM, Saturday and Sunday 11 AM-4 PM).
