With raincoats, garbage bags and just about anything else handy to keep the rain at bay, MetroEdgers enthusiastically volunteered for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2010. Hands On Sacramento organized the event as part of a national movement assembling volunteers to serve their communities and reflect on the teachings and life of Dr. King. Under the guidance of Sacramento Community Garden Coalition, Edgers planted roses, weeded gardens and trimmed trees at a community garden near Del Paso Park. The rain brought out an adventurous spirit that motivated everyone to jump in and get their hands dirty. At the end of the day, what appeared a distressed corner lot now beamed with life. In the words of Dr. King, “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle…the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” Thanks to all those that volunteered and I encourage all of you to get involved in the next community event.
